Limitless Horizons Ixil

Regina-PuenteRegina is a testament to the incredible skill, ambition and creativity that resides in Chajul and can flourish with education and support.

Regina’s favorite class is service learning where she volunteers with special needs youth. In the class, she helps people with mental or physical challenges. Through workshops and classes, she has also learned sign language. While her favorite subject is math, her dream is to study psychology and eventually work with students with special needs.

Regina also writes poetry. We are so proud to invite you to read one of her beautiful and lyrical poems which explores the unique experience of being an Ixil woman.

Soy de

Soy de corazón puro,
una niña hermosa,
que le gusta sonreír
y compartir con todos.

Soy una niña de ojos cafés
y del cabello largo, una niña
que le gusta el color celeste,
como el cielo.

Una niña que le gusta
jugar, cantar, danzar, y declamar.

Soy del municipio San
Gaspar Chajul, Quiché,
tierra de las montañas,
ríos, y animales.

Soy de un pueblo, donde
hay hombres trabajadores
y mujeres tejedoras.

Chajul es un municipio bello,
lleno de paz y amor.

Soy una niña quién se
siente feliz por la herencia
que le han dejado los
abuelos y abuelas, las que
llevo con orgullo y nunca
olvido…

Soy una niña que se siente
alargada por hablar el idioma Ixil y utilizar los
hermosos trajes que
simbolizan el esfuerzo de
cada día, por eso y más
me siento orgullosa de
ser de Chajul.

Hija de los Ixiles.

I’m of

I’m of a pure heart,
a beautiful girl,
that likes to smile
and share with everyone.

I’m a girl with brown eyes
and long hair, a girl
that likes the color blue,
the shade of the sky.

A girl that likes
to play, to sing, to dance, and
to speak.

I’m from the town of San
Gaspar, Chajul, Quiché,
land of the mountains,
rivers, and animals.

I’m from a village, where
there are men who work
and women who weave.

Chajul is a beautiful town,
filled with peace and love.

I’m a girl who
feels happy for the heritage
that has been left
by her grandfathers and grandmothers, those who
I carry with pride and never
forget…

I’m a girl that feels
enriched for speaking
the Ixil language and wearing
the beautiful clothing that
symbolizes the struggle of
each day, for this and more
I feel proud of
being from Chajul.

A daughter of the Ixil people.
