Meet our Managing Director, Verónica Yat Tiu,
when she visits Santa Cruz
on Monday, May 12th, 7:00pm-8:30pm
at the Resource Center for Nonviolence, 612 Ocean St., Santa Cruz, CA 95060
In celebration of ten years of Limitless Horizon Ixil’s progress in Chajul, Guatemala, a very remote place that has seen both drastic change and the perseverance of an ancient and honored culture over the last decade, Verónica Yat Tiu is coming to Santa Cruz. She is honored to have this opportunity to share her experience as a Maya leader in rural Guatemala, the country’s transformation in the aftermath of the Guatemalan Civil War, and Limitless Horizon Ixil’s programming with indigenous youth and families in Chajul.
Verónica was raised in Chajul during and after the civil war. Through hard work, a scholarship, and her mother’s sacrifice, Verónica is one of the first and few women from Chajul to become a university-educated professional. She went to primary school in Chajul, finished high school with a Bilingual (Spanish-English) Secretary degree from Colegio Encarnación Rosal in Quetzaltenango, and then studied at Mariano Gálvez University in Quiché. Verónica is proud of her work to provide opportunities for people in her own community, believing that “with the support of the people, we can work together on community development and make a real difference.”
The program is from 7-8 with time after to chat with LHI representatives and other guests, and browse or shop our Guatemalan handicrafts. Appetizers will be served.
