Food & Lodging

Limitless Horizons Ixil only uses safe, community-minded hotels in all locations. The accommodations are clean, comfortable, and basic. Rooms and bathrooms are shared, have running water, flushable toilets, and showers. Two to six participants will stay in each room. (Single rooms may be available for an additional fee.) Limitless Horizons Ixil students prepare breakfast as part of their work-study program and dinner is prepared in the hotel by the local family running the hotel. Lunch is either served in town or by local families in their homes. Families have gone through training to safely serve meals to our participants. In Chajul, participants also have the option to do a 1-night home stay stay with a local family.

Food will typically reflect local eating habits, including corn, eggs, vegetables, fruits, and beans. Other specific diets including vegetarians/vegans are welcome and can be accommodated. Travelers are encouraged to bring any specialty foods or snacks desired to supplement and add variety to their meals.

ce trip 2Weather

Chajul is in the mountainous Ixil region. Temperatures and weather can vary greatly day to day or even hour to hour. You should be prepared for a temperature range of 50°– 80°F. Please note that nights are much colder than the days.

The mountainous terrain around Chajul is famous for frequent fog banks and rain showers. You can expect rain on most days, generally in the form of light showers in the afternoon. You should also be prepared for gorgeous, sunny skies when the rain has cleared. The rain rarely lasts for a long period of time and will not affect our itinerary.

Safety

Limitless Horizons Ixil has hosted travelers, of diverse ages, in Guatemala for over 10 years and considers safety our top priority. Our staff members have led over 50 service trips in Latin America over the past 15 years and have extensive training in risk management and emergency response.

Limitless Horizons Ixil has developed comprehensive emergency action plans which ensure the safety of our groups, attaining medical care if necessary. Participants will be met at the airport by our trip leaders and will travel in private transportation.

Limitless Horizons Ixil is not responsible for lost or stolen goods. At orientation, we will provide suggestions on how to prevent theft. Participants are advised not to bring valuables.

Participants should be healthy, capable of hiking, walking stairs, and carrying their own luggage. Limitless Horizons Ixil requires that participants have been immunized against tetanus, diphtheria, and hepatitis B (all standard travel vaccines). Additionally, we strongly advise that participants get vaccines specific to this area: hepatitis A (two-shot series, good for 20 years) and a typhoid shot (good for two years).  The Centers for Disease Control reports that there is no malaria in any of the areas on the trip’s itinerary.

In regards to Zika virus, dengue fever, and chikungunya virus, these are spread through mosquito bites and are present in all Latin American Countries, including Guatemala. The locations we visit on this trip are at an elevation of 4,500 feet – 7,000 feet, where there is minimal mosquito activity. While infection of any of the above viruses is very unlikely, it is advised as a precaution to consistently use mosquito repellent or long sleeved clothing to avoid risk of transmission. For more information visit the Centers for Disease Control page here.

If you are concerned about digestive sickness, you can get a prescription of the antibiotic Cipro from your physician, be sure to have 4 to 10 days’ worth of medication. Cipro may work to remedy digestive issues, however in cases where symptoms persist, medical care will be provided.

There are clean medical centers in every location we visit.
